What we eat today will give us rewards accordingly later in life and that’s why it’s important to make sure we feed our body the required nutrition. In this article I am sharing few of the foods that I consume regularly and that have helped me maintain a desirable weight as well as a healthy lifestyle.
1.Greens:–Spinach, lettuce, kale, cabbage etc,.Greens and leafy vegetable are high in Vit.A and Iron therefore they not only give your body the required nutrition ,they also help in improving eye sight(because of Vit.A).They are also a good source of Vit c and are extremely low in calories. You can either consume in them raw or juice them. It’s a great way to detox your body.
2.Dry Fruits:-I always keep a small box of dry fruits in my bag. They not only keep you full but they are a very good source of copper and Vit.E which protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. They are also considered to be good fats, however make sure you consume them in moderation.Walnuts are rich in Omega 3 and Pistachios are know to be good for heart as they help in reducing bad cholesterol level.
3.Colorful Veggies and Citrus Fruits:-Beet Root,Carrot,Apple,Berries, Bell Pepper.
Red fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals like lycopene which may help in fighting cancer and has several health benefits like reducing the risk of diabetes, improving the quality of your skin etc.
On the other hand orange and yellow fruits and vegetables improve immunity and promote the health of your eyes.
4.Eggs:-Eggs are considered to be wholefoods as they are packed with good quality protein, Vit D, B6 and B12.They help in imrpovimg the overall health of yout skin and hair too.
5.Yogurt or Butter milk(For calorie watchers):-Being an Indian, yogurt or dahi is like my staple.Apart from balancing the spices in the meal it also helps in digestion ,managing PH levels, reducing high blood pressure. Some even call it negative-calorie food(foods that use more calories to get digested than what they provide). And admit it there is not just one way to eat yogurt. You can either mix it with oats or add honey or enjoy just it plain.
Try to avoid flavoured yogurt since they are loaded with sugar and are processed .I prefer home made yogurt.
6.Lentils:-Rich in Iron, Folate and Protein.Lentils are great source of protein especially for vegetarians who do not consume eggs. You can either have it wi5 rice or make lentil soup which is my favourite meal in winters.
7.Oats:-Oats are rich in anti-oxidants and they contain powerful fibre called betaglucan which helps lowering blood cholestrol level. It also helps in weight loss since it keeps you full for a longer time providing very few calories as compared to other food grains.
Note:-Above mentioned is my personal choice of foods that I have discovered over the years. It takes time to understand your body, knowing what suits you and what causes allergy. Please check with a certified doctor incase you are allergic to certain foods or an expectant mother.
Also while making a choice always give prefrence to foods found in your local area. They are less prone to chemical processing involved in export and import.
